James T. Miller, Sr. Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James T. Miller Sr., who left us on July 28, 2024, surrounded by his beloved wife and family. Born on December 4, 1972, in Columbus, MS, James was the cherished son of Lillie Ann Miller.


James attended Caldwell High School, where he was an active and enthusiastic member of the track, basketball, and football teams. He graduated with pride as part of the Class of 1992. His passion for learning and sportsmanship continued as he pursued higher education at Mississippi Valley State University and Mississippi State University.


After college, James dedicated himself to serving his country by enlisting in the U.S. Army Reserves. His commitment to his nation and community was unwavering, and he carried the values of discipline, honor, and service throughout his life.


On October 23, 2004, James married his soulmate, LaShanda Skinner. From their union came a son, James T. Miller Jr. James had a successful 21-year career at the United States Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.


Many have described him as kind, extremely empathetic, selfless, and caring. He was a strong and silent man of God. James grew even closer to God and rededicated his life back to Christ, joining the Open Arms Community Church in Jacksonville, Florida.


James was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Tommie and Caroline Miller; great-grandmother, Ozella Thomas; and aunts, Gloria Griffin and Annie Thomas; brother. Santonio Miller;paternal brother, Jerome Taylor. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife and soulmate, LaShanda Skinner Miller; son, James T. Miller Jr.; mother, Lillie Ann Miller-Green; sister, Treva (Elliot) Green-Harris; brothers, Terrell Green and Robert Green; bonus siblings, Dinah Griffin, Gary (Altricia) Griffin Jr., Divah C. Griffin, Lori Roberts, and Twanda Thomas; paternal siblings, Vyngie Washington(Stephanie), Kenny Thomas, Tasha(Remarco) Williams; aunts, Hattie Buckhalter, Laura Miller, Mary Allen, and Tommasina Grant; uncles, Mitchell Thomas, Tommie Miller Jr., and Andre Rush; nieces, Reagan E. Harris, Lauren Harris, Taylor Harris, and Savannah Harris; and nephew, Elijah J. Harris. He also leaves a host of close and loving relatives, in-laws, and friends.


James continued his acts of kindness and generosity by becoming an organ donor. He will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.
