Charles Weems Hawkins Watkins Obituary

It is with the deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of Charles Weems Hawkins Watkins,

in Jacksonville, FL. Surrounded by his loving family, Charles went to Heaven peacefully on

October 11, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, wisdom and an unwavering love for

those around him.

Born on May 1, 1960, to John Barr Watkins Jr. and Ella Weems Hawkins Watkins, Charles was

a long-term resident of Jacksonville and spent a cherished period of his life in Tennessee — a

place he longed to return to. He was a man deeply rooted in faith, compassion, and humility.

Charles earned his Master’s Degree from the Presbyterian School of Christian Education in 1993

and found his greatest joy in work that allowed him to help others. His devotion to Jesus, God,

and his family guided every aspect of his life.

Known affectionately as both a “gentleman” and a gentle man, Charles was often described as “a

good guy” — kind, thoughtful, and sincere. He had a fondness for the arts, a deep love affair

with Coca-Cola and great appreciation for nature that reflected his peaceful spirit. His favorite

hobbies included doing his Bible studies, building miniature sets, visiting state parks and

museums and attending the theater.

He was preceded in death by his father, John Barr Watkins Jr.; his mother, Ella Weems Hawkins

Watkins (who also lost a baby prior to Charles, making Charles a “Rainbow baby” — a truly

special addition to their family indeed); and his sister-in-law, Catherine Christine Marie Drompp.

Charles is survived by his ever devoted wife, Sandra J. Wilczek; his loving brother, John

Watkins (Jayne); his nieces Emily Koontz (Matthew) and Caroline Watkins; his nephew Brian

Watkins (Hannah); his doting sister, Linda W. Watkins and his adoring cousin, Donna Arthur.

Charlie was truly one of a kind and will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to know him.

“Well done, good and faithful servant.” — Matthew 25:23
